The Federalist No. 10

by Allison Jones

This letter was published 22 November 1787 and in it James Madison discusses why a democratic republic is better than a straight democracy.

“Among the numerous advantages promised by a well constructed Union, none deserves to be more accurately developed than its tendency to break and control the violence of faction.  The friend of popular governments, never finds himself so much alarmed for their character and fate, as when he contemplates their propensity to this dangerous vice.”

Free Rides From TRPTA

June 13, 2012------------FREE RIDES TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC ALL DAY
SEVENTH ANNUAL NATIONAL DUMP THE PUMP DAY TO BE HELD ON JUNE 21
Dump the Pump. Save Money. Ride Transit

With the return of high gas prices, Targhee Regional Public Transportation Authority announced today that it will join with other public transportation systems nationwide to participate in the seventh annual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 21, 2012.  TRPTA WILL OFFER FREE RIDES To The GENERAL PUBLIC All Day On June 21, 2012 ONLY.  The slogan of this year’s National Dump the Pump Day is “Dump the Pump.  Save Money.  Ride Transit.”
Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the 2012 National Dump the Pump Day is a day that encourages people to ride public transportation and save money, instead of driving a car.  Started in June 2006 when gas prices were $3 per gallon, this national day emphasizes that public transportation is a great alternative to using the personal vehicle.
Since gas prices reached close to $4 this year, saving money is on everyone’s minds and public transportation is the quickest way to beat high gas prices.  According to the latest APTA Transit Savings Report, individuals in a two-person household can save an average of more than $10,000 annually by downsizing to one car.

WHAT:            7th Annual National Dump the Pump Day
WHERE:           At TRPTA locations statewide

Natural Insect Repellants

by Allison Jones
It’s spring, the time when the yearly invasion of insects begins.  It’s time to break out the insecticides and repellants.

Synthetic insect repellants generally work well but have to be reapplied periodically to effectively ward an area.  There are several plants that naturally repel insects as long as they are alive.  While you can crush them to get juice and apply that to your skin as insect repellant, they have to be reapplied more frequently than synthetic products.  Placing these plants around your garden and around doors, windows, or outdoor gathering spots will keep bugs out of your space.  Most of the bug repellant plants like full sun and warmer climates and are aromatic.  Also, several of them are of use as culinary herbs as well.

A young American operatic soprano is coming to the Barrus Concert Hall June 28 to perform arias and broadway classics with piano accompaniment.

Alyson Cambridge is a lyric soprano, meaning that she has a slightly higher voice than other sopranos.  This type of operatic voice is described as “a warm, bright voice that carries well over an orchestra.”  The parts this type of singer plays are “sympathetic supporting characters, or younger women.”  Dramatic sopranos are slightly deeper and more powerful and generally are the lead characters.
