A young American operatic soprano is coming to the Barrus
Concert Hall June 28 to perform arias and broadway classics with piano accompaniment.
Alyson Cambridge is a lyric soprano, meaning that she has a
slightly higher voice than other sopranos.
This type of operatic voice is described as “a warm, bright voice that
carries well over an orchestra.” The
parts this type of singer plays are “sympathetic supporting characters, or
younger women.” Dramatic sopranos are
slightly deeper and more powerful and generally are the lead characters.
Cambridge sings opera, concert, and oratorio. Some of the parts she has sung include
Micaela in Carmen, Violetta in La traviata, and Mimi in La bohรจme. She has also sung in performances of Handel’s
Messiah, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, and Mozart’s Mass in C Minor. The New York Times has described her as
having a “powerful, clear voice.”
Cambridge earned a Bachelor’s of Music in Voice Performance
from Oberlin Conservatory in 2002 and continued at Curtis Institute of Music to
receive her Master’s of Music. She is
also a graduate of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindermann Young Artist Development
Program. She has performed on many prominent
stages and also won several vocal competitions.
